Description

Former Tobacco Factory

This building dates from 1670, when a convent was established here for the congregation of Augustinian Recollect Sisters. It was the city’s first convent, in addition to housing a school for girls.

After its confiscation in 1842, the convent was transformed into a tobacco factory, becoming known as “La Tabacalera” (the Tobacco Factory). It was the first major industrial enterprise in Gijón and its workforce was made up solely of women. Production activity ran from the mid-19th century up until 2002.

The Former Tobacco Factory is one of the few examples in Asturias of the reconversion of a religious building for industrial use.
