Mark August's last week on your agenda. The XXVI Natural Cider Festival takes place from August 19th to the 27th, and is one of the great events in northern Spain. The festival, which has been given the category of Interés Turístico Regional (Regional Tourist Interest), boasts a wide activities programme.

One of the main acitivities is the world record for simultaneous pouring, which gathers around 10,000 people that week's Friday at Poniente Beach. Participation is free, and you only need a bottle of cider and a glass. Nevertheless, the biggest day is Sunday. The hymn Asturias, patria querida (Asturias, dear homeland), at 12 o'clock will be the starting signal for the free preba (taste). Some 30 llagares (Asturian cider makers) will offer cider culinos (small tastes of their best ciders) to whoever arrives with his or her own glass, and then they will be able to vote for their favourite cider.

The awards for the best cider served in the Festival are the Premio del Público (Audience's Choice) and Elogio de Oro (The Golden Tribute). The difference between these categories resides in the nature of the jury, with the audience's choice being made of representatives from the audience who will do a bilnd taste.

You will be able to enjoy the Mercadín de la Sidra y la Manzana (Cider and Apple Little Market), located along Gijón/Xixón's marina. Other tasting competitions, pouring courses, cultural activities and Asturian folklore shows will also take place. Saturday's late afternoon/night will see cancios de chigre at the Main Square, with thousands of people getting together to sing popular Asturian songs.

During this week the Bus de la Sidra (Cider Bus) will be made available. It will tour different llagares around Gijón/Xixón's municipality so those interested can get to know first-hand how Asturian cider is made.
