Divertia Gijón published the report “El Turismo en Gijón/Xixón” ( Gijón/Xixón’s Tourism) that includes decisive data about visitors, profitability, tourist expenditure and the sector’s importance regarding wealth creation.
This report offers the most relevant results about Gijón/Xixón’s tourist market for the year 2016 and gives continuity to the reports that under the title “El Turismo en Gijón” are made annually by Divertia Gijón.

The most relevant data are the following:

The million and a half visitors mark has been surpassed for the first time


The total number of visitors that arrived in 2016 to Gijón/Xixón reaches for the second year in a row a record number, with 1,534,886 people, a 5.9% increase compared to 2015.

This is the fourth year in a row with important increases regarding the number of visitors, with 470,123 travelers more compared to 2012, an increase of 44.2% in only four years.

Moreover, the last two years have registered the best results ever since the registry started.

The million tourists staying overnight in Gijón has been surpassed for the first time

Data related to tourists (visitors staying overnight), the city reached 1,038,566 visitors, with an increase of 53,373 people, or 5.4% more than the previous year.

In 2012, the number of tourists hosted by the city was 745,334. In just four years, it has increased by 39.3%.

The number of tourists staying in hotel accommodations has surpassed 400,000 for the first time

The number of visitors staying in hotel accommodations in Gijón/Xixón numbers 401,756, the best of its history. This number means an increase of 28,276 people compared to the previous year and represents a 7.6% increase.

The number of foreign tourists has grown by 5.8%, up to 52,023 visitors from other countries, the highest number since we have official data, and represents 12.9% of the total, the highest percentage of the historical data series.

800,000 overnight stays in hotel accommodations have been surpassed for the first time

830,281 overnight stays in hotel accommodations were registered during 2016. Of which 714,446 were from Spanish residents and 115,835 belonged to foreign tourists. A historic record has been established for the third year in a row.

It is a 6.4% general increase compared to the previous year, with a 6.0% increase regarding Spanish tourists and 9.1% for the international ones.

Foreign tourists have increased their numbers until reaching 14.0% of overnight stays in hotel accommodations during this year.

The Average Daily Rate (ADR) has increased until achieving the best profitability data

The Average Daily Rate (ADR) for 2016 has been estimated to be 62.49 Euros. It is 5.0% higher than the one for 2015, 59.52 Euros.

The average Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) in Gijón/Xixón for 2016 has been estimated to be 36.22 Euros, a 4.9% increase from 2015. The profitability per room has been 22.4% over the one registered six years ago (29.59 Euros per available room), and it is the best figure from the historical data series.

The estimated tourism consumption for Gijón/Xixón’s municipality is of 368.6 million Euros, growing 8.8% compared to 2015 (338.7 million Euros).

Tourists’ expenditure recovers to previous years’ levels

The tourist’s average expenditure per person and travel that used group accommodations is 345.97 Euros. It has increased a 5.4% compared to 2015.

The tourist’s average expenditure per person and travel that used overnight private accommodations also grew, 3.9% compared to 2015, reaching 336.16 Euros.

The Tourism sector contribution to wealth creation has grown

The Gross Value Added (GVA) generated by tourism that has been added to the municipality of Gijón/Xixón in 2016 is 339.0 million Euros once you have considered the direct and indirect effects as well as the induced ones. The touristic activity contributes to the municipality’s economy a 7.1% of the total GVA. It has increased by 9.2% compared to 2015.

Tourism generated 7,510 job posts in Gijón/Xixón during 2016, which accounted for 8.5% of the total employment in the municipality and increase of 8.9% compared to the previous year.
