Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura

- laboral ciudad de la cultura.jpgSituated in the old Laboral University of Gijón, 3 kilometres away from the town, Laboral, City of Culture is a creative community where more than 4,000 people study, research, create and communicate one another daily. The grand building erected in the middle of the 20th century to offer the best professional training to workers´ children, has been turned into a cultural space in constant change in the 21st century.

In 2001 the Government of the Principality of Asturias took control of the deteriorated and underutilized Laboral University with the aim of bringing it to life ensuring it new educational and cultural uses. After intensive works, in its restored walls there are now university, professional and artistic training centres; rooms for conferences, events and seminars, the headquarters of Radio Television of the Principality of Asturias and, as the driving force of the city, LAboral Art and Industrial Creation Centre, a space for the exchange between art, design, industry and economic development.

Since October 2007 the restored Laboral Theatre has joined the cultural offer and it is the place where the main planning of Laboral Scene is developed. Labour Scene is a commitment to avant-garde shows. Contemporary culture, creative experimentation and multiple nets interrelate and set the standard for a town which aspires to keep open and watchful about everything that is going on in art, technology, research and communication and which breathes new life into the idealistic and perplexing architecture that Luis Moya Blanco displayed in a singular building, from the magnificent church to the restored tower viewpoint, and whose history and characteristics may be known in visits guided by students from the town itself.

The ample parking lot, the reception area in the Corinthian Patio and the Labour café complete the facilities of a different tourist and cultural offer, which will increase in the future and is already worth visiting and enjoying.
