Rivers and reservoirs

- 19074_1371372006112854.jpgThe river network of the Borough, relatively dense though with short courses, is basically arranged around two river basins: that of the River Piles to the east, and that of Aboño-Pinzales to the west, whose incisions into the terrain give rise to a topographical unit that practically coincides with the Borough limits. A multitude of streams flow into both river basins (Meredal, Llantones, Tremañes, San Miguel, Peña Francia, Lloreda, Veranes, La Braña ... ), which together with the abundant springs that abound all over the Borough are testimony to an important water surplus.

The San Andrés de los Tacones reservoir, which supplies the Arcelor steelworks (formerly ENSIDESA), likewise constitutes an environment of particular ecological interest, as is extensively frequented by migrating birds. Built in 1964, it is located in the western part of Gijón, between the parishes of Tacones and Serín.
